Each ring is used for one cycle, each cycle consists of three weeks of continuous use followed by a week without use. Nuvaring contains etonogestrel, a progestin, which has been associated with a higher risk of deep venous thrombosis, which can cause blood clots. In two studies 15% of women discontinued use after one year because of adverse side effects. Several possible side effects: - Stroke - Blood Clots - Deep Venous Thrombosis - Heart Attack - Pulmonary Embolism (PE) These severe side effects have been linked to the high dose of etonogestrel released by NuvaRing.
